Why embrace seasonal eating?

There is something quite beautiful about the seasons. Well, not perhaps the four seasons in a day that Melbourne tends to experience, but the fact that seasonal changes provide us the opportunity to continue to renew, replenish and rejuvenate ourselves.

We can embrace seasonal changes with our eating habits and the food we eat by adapting to the seasons and it beautiful offerings. Promoting balance and homeostasis.

Eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that have been harvested locally and in season, ensures the food we’re consuming is fresh & flavoursome due to less processes and preserving methods, and long distance transportation.

Benefits of seasonal eating:

  • More bang for your buck –  Do you ever visit the market or local grocer and notice a large abundance of a particular fruit or vegetable, and cheaper than usual (eg. Mandarins in winter)? This is because; they’re in-season, more readily available.

  • Wise advice* Take advantage of low price points, and enjoy a higher nutrient profile (rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants) compared to out of season imported/preserved counterparts due to seasonal produce being harvested at their peak.

  • *For top quality produce, purchase local/Australian fresh produce where possible).

  • Seasonal eating supports the environment, local businesses & farmers. Visit your weekend farmers market for fresh, flavoursome produce and a heart-warming experience.

  • Seasonal eating in Victoria keeps meals interesting throughout the year. Eating a varied diet in line with the changing seasons is a great excuse to expand your kitchen creativity, as well as your health potential #immunity

If you are someone who is craving fresh produce out-of-season (eg. blueberries in autumn or winter) opt for the frozen option, as they are picked at the height of their ripeness, then flash frozen to retain nutrition and taste. Alternatively, you can stock up and freeze your favourite berries whilst they’re in season so you can enjoy them at a later date.
